Description
What is A Water Pressure Reducing Valve?
A water pressure reducing valve (it is also called a pressure regulator, or PRV) controls the water pressure that comes into the home from the main pipeline. With this valve, it helps to reduce the pressure when the pressure of the main water line exceeds 80PSI. This valve brings down the pressure to a safe level before the water comes into any plumbing devices inside the home. The high water pressure may cause many plumbing problems like leakages, pipe bursting ect, so keeping the water pressure under a safe lever is very important and necessary.
When the water system is protected by a water pressure reducing valve, there will be less stress through the inner plumbing appliances. Such as faucets, shutoff valves, water heaters will be less to leak, and fluctuations in water pressure are balanced.
How Does A Water Pressure Reducing Valve Work?
A water pressure reducing valve is normally installed near the main water shutoff switch. You can start or stop it by using the adjustment screw. The water pressure reducing valve works under a spring-loaded diaphragm, which will narrow or widen the water flow according to the amount of water pressure entering the valve. When the water enters the valve at high pressure, the inner device constricts the diaphragm to narrow the flow of water. Under this situation, the pressure will be reduced into a range of 50 to 80 psi. It greatly reduces the stress of your plumbing system. Conversely, when the water pressure drops, the diagram opens wider to allow more water to flow through the valve.
You can adjust the screw on the top of regulator to limit the water flow to adjust the pressure
Where&How is A Water Pressure Reducing Valve Used For?
A water pressure reducing valve is used to connect with your plumbing system and is installed where the main water line enters your home. The functions is reducing the water pressure once pipes pressure exceeds 80 PSI, which is the generally approved rate for residential or light commercial useIf you want to DIY, it’s best to install it after the shutoff valve. Before beginning, shut off the water supply lines.
You’ll notice that most pressure regulator valves have an arrow pointing in the direction of the water flow. We should connect the pipes with the valve in the right position. If the position is wrong, the valve will not work properly. Be sure to test the water pressure and make adjustments accordingly.
