LEAF What Is A Thermostatic Mixing Valve?

Thermostatic Mixing Valve is one kind of valves which is mainly used in electric water heaters or solar water heaters system. This valve can adjust the outlet water temperature to be the set value by limiting and mixing the amount of inlet hot water or cold water. It provides safety assurance by preventing high temperature when people is washing hands, taking shower or bathing.

Important Thing You Need to Know

The maximum hot water temperature at the tap should be 45°C or less for childcare centers, schools, homes for the elderly and similar facilities, and 55°C for other buildings.

LEAF How Does A Thermostatic Mixing Valve work?

thermostatic mixing valve structure pic 2A sensor element is placed at the mixed outlet of the thermostatic mixing valve. It drives the qmovement of the valve’s core to block or open the inlet port of the cold and hot water. When the temperature is set by adjusting the top knob, the proportion of cold and hot water entering the outlet can be changed accordingly, so that the outlet water temperature remains constant value.

When a temperature is set, if the outlet temperature is lower than the set value, the sensor element will shrinks at the cold situation. It drives the valve core to move upward, to reduce the opening port of the cold water and increase the opening port of the hot water, so that the proportion of hot water increases while the  proportion of cold water decreases, then the temperature will rise after mixing and reach to the set value.

However, if the outlet temperature is higher than the set value, the sensor element will expand and drive the valve core to move downward, to increase the opening port of the cold water and reduce the opening port of the hot water, so that the proportion of cold water and hot water will be adjusted accordly, then the temperature after mixing will decrease and reach to the set value. It works again and again in this way.

LEAF How To Install A Thermostatic Mixing Valve?

  • A.  All installations should be carried out by a professional plumber.
  • B. Before installation, flush the pipe’s impurity to ensure the system proper operation.
  • C. Install the pipes according to the marks on valve body. For example, connect the hot water pipe with the inlet side marked H, cold water pipe to be connected with the inlet side marked C. The last side is connected with the outlet pipe.
  • D. Set the outlet temperature you want by turning on the hand wheel. The 1 means lowest temperature 30℃,7 means the highest temperature 55℃. You can adjust the temperature at different value.
  • E. When inlets pressure is not the same, the external check valves will start to prevent cross-flow of hot&cold water .
  • Attention: If the ratio between two inlets is too big, one flow-limiting valve should be fixed at the side of higher pressure.
